Although the Novell Small Business Suite 6.6 includes a lot of software, you need to be concerned only with the following CDs in regard to ZENworks Desktop Management:
Because OES NetWare 6.5 ships with the suite, the focus of this documentation is the setup and operation of Desktop Management in a NetWare 6.5 network environment.
ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management also works in an all-Windows or a mixed NetWare/Windows environment. For more information about this environment, see "Understanding ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management" in the Novell ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management Administration Guide.
In addition to the physical media listed above, you might need to download and apply the latest patches for ZENwork 6.5 Desktop Management. To locate these updates, go to the Novell Support > Download > Patches Web site.
A basic installation and setup of ZENworks Desktop Management requires the following:
When these basic elements of the product are installed, you can decide which components of the product you want to use:
ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management also gives you the option of not using the Novell Client to authenticate to eDirectory to receive policies and applications at a desktop. With the Desktop Management Agent installed on their workstations, users can securely log in from outside a company's network firewall or from inside that firewall without seeing any Novell product.
This topic includes the following information:
Before you can begin to install ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management, you need to make sure that the server where you will install the product meets the supported software and hardware configuration as outlined in the following sections:

IMPORTANT: The Desktop Management Server does not function in an IP-to-IP gateway or in an IPX-to-IP gateway environment.
For full functionality and performance, the workstations to be managed by ZENworks Desktop Management require the following minimum amounts of processing power, disk space, and RAM on the desktop machines:
IMPORTANT: ZENworks Desktop Management is not supported on the NEC* 9800 (also known as PC98) series of personal computers.
The workstation where you install the ZENworks Desktop Management Agent must meet platform requirements. Some supporting software must also be installed. This section includes the following required software information:

If you intend to use only the Novell Client for authentication (Novell Client not required), we recommend that you install version 4.9.1 (Windows 2000/NT/XP, June 2005 or later). You can find this software on the Novell Client Software CD. For more information, see Installing the Novell Client on User Workstations.
Some software must be installed on the user workstation so that the ZENworks Desktop Management Agent will work properly:
Novell ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management requires the Desktop Management Agent. With this agent installed, users who log in directly with the Novell Client can use ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management directly, while users in an all-Windows environment or users on workstations located outside of the corporate network firewall can log in and authenticate the workstation through the ZENworks Middle Tier Server to Novell eDirectory using port 80 over HTTP or port 443 over HTTPS.
IMPORTANT: The Desktop Management Agent must be installed on every workstation where you want to deploy ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management functionality. This includes workstations where the Novell Client is already installed.
When authenticated with the proper credentials, the workstation receives the distributed applications, schedules, policies, and various workstation inventory, remote management, and Workstation Imaging enabling files as designated by you, the administrator.
The Desktop Management Agent includes functionality for login and authentication, packaging, sending, and receiving XML requests over HTTP or HTTPS.
The workstation functionality afforded by ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management components is available only if you install the Desktop Management Agent. This is true even if you currently have the Novell Client installed on that workstation. The Desktop Management Agent installation removes the ZENworks features that were previously installed by the Novell Client and replaces them with selected ZENworks workstation features. For procedures and more information, see "Installing and Configuring the Desktop Management Agents" in the ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management Installation Guide.
This software works with Web server software installed on a network server to set up authentication and communication between the Desktop Management Server inside the corporate firewall and workstations outside the corporate firewall. This communication makes it possible for mobile users to get Desktop Management services when they are travelling. It also allows communication for workstations that do not have the Novell Client.
The modules of the Middle Tier Server plug in to the Web server software and act as a Web service. The Middle Tier Server allows access to Novell eDirectory and the Windows file system (if running on a Windows server) or the NetWare file system (if running on a NetWare server) for the users and workstations inside or outside the firewall.
Using ZENworks Desktop Management through the Desktop Management Agent and the Middle Tier Server, users can access their applications and policies through a Web server interface. For diagrams showing how the Middle Tier Server works, see "Process Flow in ZENworks Desktop Management" in the ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management Installation Guide.
For detailed steps for installing the Middle Tier Server, see "ZENworks Middle Tier Server Installation Procedure" in the Novell ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management Installation Guide.
The ZENworks Desktop Management Server software lets you centrally create and manage policies and profiles for users and workstations on a network. These policies and profiles enable you to distribute, manage, and update applications, perform advanced inventory and remote management functions, and automatically install operating systems on the Windows workstations in your network.
The installation program installs selected .jar files to the servers you select. These .jar files are the ZENworks Desktop Management plug-ins that you use to manage the ZENworks Desktop Management objects in a directory tree. These plug-ins are a large part of what is sometimes referred to as the back end of the ZENworks Desktop Management setup. The back end also includes eDirectory, ZENworks policy and application files, various ZENworks services, and designated NetWare or Windows servers that are members of the same eDirectory tree where the ZENworks files are located.
For detailed steps for installing ZENworks Desktop Management Server software, configuring the Sybase* database object, determining whether the eDirectory Schema has been extended, setting up the required desktop polices and the Workstation Import policy, and installing the ODBC Drivers, see "Desktop Management Server Installation Procedure" in the Novell ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management Installation Guide.
Automatic Workstation Import imports workstations into eDirectory and integrates them automatically. The Workstation objects created by Automatic Workstation Import provide you with a way to push application software and computer settings (such as policies) down to the workstations by using the Novell Application Launcher. This is something we suggest you do even with a basic ZENworks Desktop Management setup.
Detailed steps that explain how to set up Automatic Workstation Import are available in "Setting Up Automatic Workstation Import" in the Novell ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management Installation Guide.
